There is a lot of talk about cloud gaming these days but I've never really understood the need for streaming video gaming. I mean I can understand that cloud computing can facilitate a bigger multiplayer online world for games like World Of Warcraft and Minecraft etc. but what's the point of playing a game like Street Fighter IV through streaming video gaming? Video streaming cloud gaming are services where you have a thin client, the player uploads their controller input in real-time and all the computation and video rendering takes place in the cloud (aka large bulking datacenters) which is then streamed back to the player. There are announcements of tech companies like OneLive and NVidea that cloud gaming is the future of gaming, and that it can provide "increased graphics quality without the need for expensive hardware"? I'm just wondering, doesn't that introduce a lot of overhead and complications just for slightly better graphics? There's lots of potential for input lag, video lag, video compression artifacts etc. Also, call me old fashioned but how much more realistic do the graphics need to be, and how much more cheaper can the hardware get? The PS3 and Xbox 360 already deliver some pretty damn good looking graphics. I haven't seen much of the PS4/XBOXONE yet but I can only assume it's even better. It seems to me that the real advantage is economic reasons for publishers and developers, i.e. it's easier to monetise through payed licensees instead of a single upfront payment for a game. Players could buy a monthly subscribtion to a cloud service or something like that, instead of just paying for a game once. But then what is the advantage for players? Any thoughts on this?

I was a big fan of Operation Wolf and Space Gun in the arcade, but my favourite by far is Point Blank especially 1 and 2.
That game was the reason I bought a Playstation + guncontroller back in the day and it's a real shame it only works with CRT tv's.. And, like vetus pointed out, I find it a bit puzzling that Point Blank was never released on the Wii.
Lightgun games were never big business on homeconsoles to begin with, and they seem to be decline. The PS1 had a bunch of lightgun games but by contrast the only PS3 games that support a lightgun (as far as I know) are Deadstorm Pirates and two Time Crisis games. But they're still big in arcades I guess. I've recently been in arcades with HotD4 and Terminator Salvation which are ok games, but I think they don't quite have the appeal and variety of Point Blank.

Does the recently released Major Mayhem (also for Android) count? In fact, how many Cabal style shooters are there for touch devices these days? Just found this an unofficial Blood Bros - Arcade Machine iphone app for $1.99 by some indie developer. I'm surprised Apple allows this as it's basically MAME with a pirated ROM copy. Wouldn't Star Fox and the likes count as well? In Star Fox you shoot projectiles which collide with enemies, while in Cabal, Blood Bros, Wild Guns etc. the path of your bullets doesn't matter. That is, the bullets don't move between your character and the crosshair, and colliding with targets on its way, instead the bullets only impact on the point of the crosshair. Btw in Wild Guns the bullets are shown but it's only as a visual effect. Maybe I'm nitpicking but I guess that's inevitable with such a narrowly defined game genre..

The game has many stereotypical American enemies like Rambo and cowboys and it presumably takes place in USA. So maybe it was a weird translation mix up and they actually meant "Yankee Ninja" .. On the other hand, the credit screen mentions "character design Charlie Arai" so maybe that explains it.

Back in 2011 Capcom released Smurf’s Village for the iPhone, it was one of the first game with ludicrous in-app purchases. You can buy virtual smurfberries for $100, one-hundred actual real dollars. Plus it's a game specifically aimed at kids, so you just know they were hoping players would buy them by accident. I remember being surprised that a big respectable name like Capcom was behind such a vile product.

Aqua Jack (Taito, 1990) is kind of like a mix between Cabal and After Burner What about Starblade and Vajra? Both Starblade arcade game and Vajra the LaserActive game are "traditional" first person crosshair games. i.e. they are like Operation Wolf, you can't move an on-screen character around. //offtopic: I really love the flat polygon graphics in both Vajra and the original Starblade arcade version, they look so clean and crisp. Who needs textures anyway

I've linked to the gameplay videos if you want to see them in action. This thread is also to discuss about them. I've compiled a playlist on youtube with (as far as I know) all games with this style of gameplay. Cabal type games, old school crosshair shootersThe Cabal style games in this list are: - Cop-Out ZX Spectrum © 1986 Mikro-Gen
- Cabal - Playthrough Arcade Completed - no lifes lost - 1coin
- Arcade - Dynamite Duke
- Double Dynamite 2 Players Co-op
- Cabal & Blood Brothers
- ATB's Gameplay: Blood Bros (Arcade)
- Double Hawk - Sega Master System Playthrough 1/2
- NAM-1975 (Arcade / Neo-Geo) [HD] Part 1
- NES Longplay [385] The Punisher
- Spinal Breakers Co op Playthrough
- Predator 2 (PC/Amiga)
- DOS - Kuwait Assault
- Riot (Arcade)
- Pirates (Nix) (1994)
- Alligator Hunt Completed 1 Coin No Damage Hardest Arcade
- MAME--Hard Times (1/4)
- SNES Longplay [079] Wild Guns
- Binyu Hunter [] Game Sample -- PC-98
- Time Circle (??), 1995, DOS
- Charge N Blast for the Dreamcast
- Sin and Punishment - N64 Gameplay
- Capcom Mitchell Gamshara Arcade Game
- Swat Police (ARCADE) Inv
- Hot Shot (PS1) Gameplay
- Zombie Panic in Wonderland - Wii - official video game debut trailer
Games that come close, but where there is no crosshair or the hero and crosshair cannot move independently. - Devastators (1988, Konami)
- Dead Angle - Arcade 1988
- Rambo III (Arcade)
- GI Joe (Arcade 1992) [HD] - Part 1
- Iwanaga - PC
- Flame Gunner (ARCADE)
And finally, the SNES version of The Untouchables has a few Cabal-like bonus stages, and in Dick Tracy on the SEGA Genesis you can shoot a tommygun into the background which is essentially the same gameplay mechanic as Cabal except there is no crosshair.

Since Total Carnage was made around the period of Gulf War I, probably the claim "the mother of all boss monsters" was inspired by Saddam's similar claim about "the mother of all battles" (mocked countless times, even on Animaniacs). Total Cargnage has more references to Gulf War, for example the reporter in the cut scene there is a factory with a "baby milk" sign.

Just using F4, F6 and F8 made the game MUCH easier than having to type everything in English. Especially if you're just a kid and English isn't your native language.. I remember thinking, even back then, how easy this Black Cauldron game was compared to King's Quest and Space Quest etc. Played through the entire game on a rainy sunday.

Actually I really liked Smash TV on the SNES, played it a lot back in the day. Also, the NES version had an interesting control setup. One player could use 2 separate controllers to simulate the dual joysticks from the arcade machine. It also supported the Four Score periferal, so 2 players could use 2 controllers each, as the Angry Video Game Nerd explains in this recent video..

*another 3 year bump* Crime Fighters 2 (aka Vendetta) probably runs on the same Simpsons and Turtles hardware, at least from the looks of it. And also, listen to this "ooww!" scream sound effect at 3:27 and again at 3:35. It sounds awfully familiar, does anyone know in what other games it's also used? The same sound effect is also used in the original Metal Slug, when you kill enemies with the flame thrower. www.youtube.com/watch?v=6h3GBtY8x1M#t=3m26s
