I just noticed over at stackoverflow there is a new Proposed Q&A site for vintage-computer hobbyists interested in restoring, preserving, and using the classic computer and gaming systems of yesteryear. So this would be like stackoverflow, butwith questions about old computers and game consoles. Here's an interesting tid-bit of info; according to BackintoysTV there was a Super Famicom port of Blood Bros in the making at one point. Unfortunately the main game designer fell ill and had to leave the company, and eventually the project was canceled.

Sorry in advance if I'm going a little bit off topic here; The game Blood Money (1989) used a painting by Peter Andrew Jones, which was initially used as the cover of a sci-fi novel "Protector" (1973) by Larry Niven. It's not really traced, more like just copied with permission&credits btw. Psygnosis used a lot of these kinds of beautiful boxart in the 80s. Although weirdly they usually did not reflect the actual games at all, see more here.

The in-game title screen of Laydock (MSX, 1985) looks fascinating. It's probably based on the trench from Star Wars or maybe Battlestar Galactica. I can't think of any other game of that era having such a sophisticated 3D image. So I wonder how they made this, because 3D modeling software wasn't as widely available back then. There's definitely similarities with the design of Starfighters (1984, MSX laserdisc), see movie below at 50:40

I can only speak for myself, but the Gaelco games that stand out for me are Radikal Bikers (1998) and Alligator Hunt (1994). Radikal Bikers had some pretty good 3D graphics and animations for the time and the gameplay was good too, with alternate paths and shortcuts and everything. Unfortunately the PS1 conversion wasn't that good. Alligator Hunt was a decent enough Cabel-style game, it had completely digitized music and the first few stages are pretty varied, but later levels get really repetitive.

How about the devil scene from "The Adventures of Mark Twain" (1985). This was a family movie also aimed at kids..

I didn't play Bio Menace a whole lot, but as far as I know it only uses the standard EGA 16 color palette, same goes for all Keen games btw. The article screenshots also show default EGA colors only.

One of Liu Kang's fatalities is Arcade Drop, where he kills someone by dropping an arcade machine on them. mortalkombat.wikia.com/wiki/Liu_KangHe had it in MK3 and according to the wiki, he had it in MK vs DC too. Btw Mortal Komat 3 and Ultimate Mortal Komat 3 have a hidden Galaga-type mini game, which can be accessed through a Kombat Kode. During the "vs" screen below each character there are 3 symbols and the players can cycle through the symbols to combine codes, using Low-Punch, Block, Low-Kick. MK3 Galaga mini-game code: 6-4-2 - 4-6-8 which will show (Goro)-(?)-(MK) - (?)-(Goro)-(Shao Kahn)

Someone mentioned GTA series before. I remember GTA: San Andreas had four machines you could find and play; Duality, Go Go Space Monkey, Let's Get Ready to Bumble, and They Crawled From Uranus. GTA San Andreas has the most, but every GTA game contain one or more playable arcade games. See full descriptions here, and as an example here's a video of Let's Get Ready to BumbleDammit, I just wanted help with something, not MORE work! (Just kidding, the more the better. Keep 'em coming!) Also, what are some video games with game consoles within the game world? Playable or otherwise. So far I've got Ganbare Goemon 2, Gokinjo Boukentai, Star Parodier, Banjo-Kazooie, Blue Stinger (which also has an arcade), Shenmue, Illbleed, GTA San Andreas, Saints Row 2 and Venus Hostage. Lollypop (Amiga/Pc, 1994) has one of those old LCD game as a bonus mini-game.

Not sure if you want to count this one but.. playing Donkey Kong (GameBoy, 1994) on the SNES via the Super Game Boy puts a border around the game making it look like an arcade machine. See screenshots on Mobygames

I dunno if it's already mentioned in the brainstorming thread,but here it goes: towards the end of the last level of Amiga platformer Zool you come across a gigantic coin-op cabinet and you can press the jump and the fire buttons in order to help the coin-op's main sprite to reach three extra lives. You can check it out in this longplay around 1:19:00 . Wow great example, and pretty obscure too Btw maybe keep all suggestions in one thread? Most examples I knew are already mentioned, but I've got a few more. Speed Freaks (PS1, 1999) has got an arcade machine in the character select/menu room. After selecting your character, you select the difficulty and tracks using the arcade machine. See video hereSly Cooper: Thieves in Time (aka Sly 4 on PS3) contains 6 arcade machines with mini games, get the highscore on each to win 6 trophies. See video hereBanjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge (GBA, 2003), after finishing the game during the end credits, you can collect N.Kreditzs coins. When the credits finish load your game again and go to Spillers Harbor, somewhere in that level there is an arcade machine. You can use the N.Kreditzs there to play mini-games that you finished already. See video here

I dimly recall there was some kind of blurb in Nintendo Power concerning how the game was stuck in pre-release hell for some weird reason – not the sort of thing one normally found in NP in those days. Maybe it had something to do with the graphics? I've always thought the graphics in "Porky Pig's Haunted Holiday" looked notably bland and undetailed, like they are unfinished. Especially if you compare it with other Sunsoft games like Bugs Bunny Rabbit Rampage or Daffy Duck: The Marvin Missions.

I'm looking for a vertical shmup that was likely released on PC around 1994. All I remember about it is that you pilot a jet fighter type craft, and you start on Earth before heading to space. The final battle takes place on a spacestation IIRC. While Raiden did have a DOS port, I'm not sure that's the game in question having recently watched a longplay of it. I won't rule it out, however! Are you sure it was vertically scrolling, not horizontally? If not, then perhaps Tubular Worlds?
