You probably have old rom versions which have now changed to either a different name or different roms inside the zips. Mameinfo says the game was last updated on version .190 which means it was only a few months ago. Ah, well that would definitely explain the issue. Thanks! Now if only there was a site that maintained an exhaustive collection of MAME ROMs...

Lizardcube only takes care of the art, the real masters of the game here are the people at Guard Crush. I've never played their other game, Streets of Fury, but it has received good reviews across the web. Omar Cornut, the Wonder Boy-super fan that is the programmer for The Dragon's Trap, isn't even listed in the credits so far. So, we mustn't look at Dragon's Trap to find out if the game will play fine, but at Streets of Fury. As for the looks, than yes, look at Wonder Boy - it's the same French comics style (which seems off for me, since I see SOR as 100% Japanese anime). About Yuzo Koshiro: his answer at Twitter hints he's somehow related to the project, but is the 2010's Koshiro the same as the 1990's Koshiro? Couldn't a good French composer mimic his old style better than the man himself? Sonic Mania has this epic soundtrack with some new tracks that feel Sonic-ish to the bone, and these were made by a guy whose Portuguese name we didn't see on a Mega Drive credits screen.
And we should remember: even if the game is shit, we'll always have SOR Remake.

That seems to have done the trick. Thanks a million! And thank you to everyone else in the thread for enduring this tangent.

Also, regarding the term "lazy":
IMO, there are three huge (original) beat 'em up franchises: Double Dragon, Final Fight, Streets of Rage.
There hasn't been a new Final Fight in ages, and the last Double Dragon game - part 4 as well! - was done in super cheap "retro graphics", aka "pixelled but not really adhering to technical limitations, but hey, it's retro, not cheap". Before that, we got Wanderer of Dragons (...) and Neon (done by a Western company, and quite divisive as well).
Sega, give 'em crap for all the shoddy Sonic games over the years, cancelled a bunch of SoR games that probably would have been no worse than Wanderer of Dragons (to put it mildly). It seems they do care about the quality of the franchise (and of course the chance of the game to make a profit - they are a company after all, not a fan developer).
Also, something occured to me today: People usually call Streets of Rage a "90s franchise", but part 1 always felt pretty 80s to me because the crime ridden cities still had that 80s action movie feel to it. Part 2 expanded the scenery quite a bit, and alas, was a lot more colorful (we've talked about this before). Part 3 especially also had a super 90s soundtrack (part 1 not so much, part 2 somewhat).
What I'm getting at is that SoR's atmosphere and flair isn't really all that clear cut and static. There's certain recurring themes, but I'd rather have them do a new thing than a pure 90s throwback (seeing how I much prefer the 80s infused tone of part 1). The trailer seems to suggest they're doing a bit of everything and also new stuff. So, yeah.
But I'll readily admit, I mostly WANT this to be good.

I said this on Discord, but I could totally see Capcom bringing back Final Fight now for FF4. Especially since Final Final characters were absorbed into Street Fighter, so they've stayed current and much less obscure than SoR.

I'm surprised they haven't done some sort of DLC spinoff using the SF5 models (or even SF4), like that Tekken Force game in Tekken 3 on the PS1.

Oh god. Do you have any idea what you've just done, man? Mega Man 11, Streets of Rage 4, Final Fight 4. I mean, I'd complain if those weren't franchises I love.

Capcom has no concept of restraint. They'd run it straight into the ground. Then again, three or four new, same-ish Final Fights would still be pretty welcome these days.

About 90% of the ports of part 1 are crappy, part 2 is rather forgettable (especially now that you can play the arcade version of part 1 easily), and most people dislike Streetwise (I don't think anybody likes Revenge). The series already lives off of its highs, not due to a general high level of quality. If they manage to add one more quality title to the legacy, hey, I'm all for it.

Final Fight Legacy Collection when, Capcom?
Though they'd probably only include 1-3 and leave out the rest. I want to play Mighty!

Mighty is a bastard. I've tried to beat that thing like 15 times and just never seem to be able to finish it off.

Streets of Rage 1 is still a very '90s video game, on a new-ish, '90s system. Of course the end of a decade typically bleeds into the beginning of the next one culturally. And yeah, they already did try a FF revival, it's just that everybody hated it, and apparently you fight zombies in it? And they tried a VS fighter, remember that? Also not very good. Final Fight's creator didn't seem to believe in or care about his game at all, it just happened to turn out good; then he moved on to SF2 (and a few year later to his own company, Arika), so the series never really had the guidance of a talented creator after the first. FF2 is something like Golden Axe 2 on the Genesis, a pointless sequel that adds nothing, except it's much, much worse as the levels run on forever. FF3 added some FF2-style special moves, so it's an improvement, but enemies just stand around waiting for you to hit them. Mighty is so-so, the rest is bad.
