Got Duke Nukem Forever as a late birthday gift yesterday. Can't wait to play it tonight once I get back home. Haven't played a decent Duke game for a long time. The only one I liked after the release of Duke Nukem 3D was Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project (2002). Anyone looking forward to play this? www.dukenukemreloaded.com/It's an up-coming fan-remake of Duke Nukem 3D, approved by the makers of Duke Nukem Forever.

I don't know, I suppose the game is going to be mediocre but pretty funny. That's what Duke has always been, whether people want to argue otherwise or not. Duke Nukem 3D is definitely not mediocre. I beat the game just recently, having never played it back in the day, and I still enjoyed it immensely. Seconded. Level design and interactivity so good, I could have gladly done without the crass humour. Why so many people are lamenting that the negative reviews fail to see DNF as a throwback to the 1990s? How can the reviewers do it if Duke has regenerating health and no more than two weapons at once, like, you know, most recent shooters? How much hypocrisy is in the bit where Duke scoffs at Master's Chief armor?

It's kind of difficult to look forward to something when they have pretty much fuck-all to show as of yet aside from a couple of target renders and a mountain of concept art. =P

Isn't that all we had of DNF for like 8 years? Really, Duke is pretty much doing nothing for the first 20 minutes based on that video and he seems to lose it after a single can of beer (I'm nitpicking, sue me, but he's Duke Nukem and his vision goes blurry after a single can, wat). Despite his advanced age, Duke still maintains the metabolism of a marathon runner.

So, I've got to ask: Is this game REALLY that bad? I know it's got a lot of flaws on it, and I'm still pissed about the two guns thing. But still, though, it doesn't seem like that bad of a game at all. Maybe only about a 7 or 8, not anywhere close to the level of hype it got, but still. Seems a lot more fun than your average Call of Duty, anyway.
Besides that, I'm always big on levels where you end up being shrunk and put into a tiny version of a mundane area, for some reason.

I dunno, I just have a feeling from some of the stuff I'm reading that people are/were setting their expectations for this game WAY to highly before having played it, and that this accounts for a lot of the negativity that seems to be floating around the internet for the same ATM.

Eh, for most of us, our expectations weren't really that high. All we wanted out of Duke was a throwback to the golden age of FPS design, with mechanics and level design similar to that used in games like Duke 3D and Doom.
Instead, we got a spectacle-oriented modern shooter with a coating of Duke Nukem aesthetics. Lame.

Well I preordered this, so if it sucks, it can get in line with Bulletstorm and Brink*.
*I didn't think Brink was a bad game, but it had too many problems to be a competitive shooter.

I've heard largely mixed opinions of Duke Nukem Forever but considering I don't have a high standard for shooters (I like Kane and Lynch 2, need I say more?) I think it'll serve it's purpose if it is a generic shooter with a sense of humour. It would appear critics have taken the hypocritical route. They've called themselves "big fans" of the series but whine that it is "nothing like the original" and looks rubbish "compared to Call of Duty". It makes me sadface. I'll leave my opinion of the game itself reserved until I've tried it out, it is currently downloading as I speak.

Eurogamer's review of the Xbox 360 version. Very harsh, the part about the humour is subjective, but overall not unfair. It also specifies the PC version's not so terribile technically. Why some comments contesting the review say that it's a throwback to old shooting fun if it has reg. health and only two weapons? Do those people really remember Duke Nukem 3D? From a comment of the review: "I was a regular 3DR forum member since 1997 and the general vibe I got of their work ethic was to just have fun, drink lots of soda and live on the millions D3D brought them. They were pretty isolated out there in Garland, TX and they closed themselves off from the gaming community and developers, basically got stuck in the past and kept repeating the same mistakes, changing engines and so on." While the quality of many games is damaged by tight schedules and such, DNF was damaged by the opposite - even the most independent of projects needs some discipline to create a good finished product in a reasonable time. 3DR lacked it.

I won't be getting the full game for awhile, and I can't play the demo, so all I've been able to see are impressions from people who've played the game. It's disappointing that there aren't more positive impressions I see a few people online say they like it, but not many.

Instead, we got a spectacle-oriented modern shooter with a coating of Duke Nukem aesthetics. Lame. Only we really didn't. Yes there's regenerating health and two weapons at a time, but it's not like this is a setpiece extravaganza like Modern Warfare. It's an all right game. If anyone was expecting absolute brilliance, well, this isn't it. But it's pretty decent fun. I think it'll fall to overhype and the "this is good but not 15 years good!" crap, but at least it isn't bad.

I liked the game despite its flaws, which for me were: - Restrictive two-weapon system (wasn't Duke supposed to be super-human?!)
- The weapons, despite being mostly the same as in Duke Nukem 3D, doesn't feel right (under-powered?)
- No jetpack in single-player campaign (multiplayer only)
- Linear level designs
I would've liked the game *much* more if it had the old weapon system. Maybe in the future with some download content?
