I think it's pretty fun, personally. A little more "modern" than I'd like (I don't mind the regenerating health; it makes sense for Duke. The two weapons thing not so much), but it's fun.
I'm playing it on PC btw. 360 version's apparently absolutely horrible.

Yeah I read a bunch of reviews complaining about graphics and loading and was really confused. Then I noticed everyone is reviewing the 360 version.

Or maybe it has that weird Halo 3 disc streaming optomisation? (I doubt it) You'll like the fact it's easy achievements all in though

As far as installing goes, I'm constantly surprised to run into people who never make use of the option. Maybe there are a lot of people with ye olde 20 gig HDDs out there...

Maybe there are a lot of people with ye olde 20 gig HDDs out there... You know I didn't get a bigger hard drive til' last Christmas and I have to say- sticking to a 20 gig limit (I could only fit on 2 games asides from my XBLA stuff) is the only reason I finished Dark Void and a few other stinkers...

Well supposedly Gears 3 is getting a branded version of the system this fall, along with a 320 gig drive to go with it. Assholes. I just finally broke down and got a 250.

I still have only a 20 gig HDD. I really need to upgrade.

I'll be honest: Mass Effect 3 lost quite a few points when I saw that it had gun turret segments...and realized that cool Omniblade is probably only for finishers.

I'm starting to wonder how many people remember DN3D as well as they think they do. Part of why I haven't been entirely convinced either way by most of the impressions is because they seem to either be from people who didn't play/didn't like Duke Nukem 3D, or they're from people who are comparing the game to those which are made today. I haven't played many FPSs in general, and I just beat Duke Nukem 3D a month or two ago, so from that perspective I don't know how I'd feel about the gameplay, compared to what everyone else is saying.

Well I just finished it. I'm sorry but I found it pretty dreadful from start to finish. I think you all know I am not one for FPS games at the best of times- I prefer more old school FPS games like the original Quake really but this...I dunno... I found that as a modern FPS game it isn't great. As a Duke sequel- it isn't great. So basically it is a poor modern FPS game with a Duke Nukem skin- tbh the only thing I really enjoyed was the 2001 trailer unlocked after finishing the game- it's a much more enjoyable experience It felt like half the time it was trying to distract you from how average it was- stupid vehicle segments, the turret sections, the pointless lapdance dream sequence ugh. Then there is the fact the actual core gameplay isn't really up to much either- I think I have already bitched about the stupid button bashing which just serves to break the pacing rather than add anything to the game. Most of the bosses are pretty lame too- explosive weapons are your only options and it pretty much results in hide and seek from their big attacks- ocassionally you'll fight some lesser enemies in an attempt to spice the battles up- that doesn't do the job I'm afraid ¬_¬ I'm certainly not going to imply it is an awful game- but it's pretty bad when you can say stuff like Prey even out do this. Funny though- I'm kinda reminded of the Chinese Democracy situation- would it have been better to have this remain a long standing joke? You really have two options in this situation - come out with at least a good game that doesn't meet the hype but satisfies on some level or come out with something so utterly stupid/awful/offbeat that people remember it at least for that reason. Coming out with something that is just really bland and average just isn't going to satisfy either the mockers or the fans edit: I forgot to mention the awful environmental puzzles. I have a feeling they were trying to do something Half Life 2'ish here but they aren't challenging and again- they certainly aren't something I remember happening in Duke Nukem 3D. It comes across like something that would have been done in and around the start of the 00's to show off "advanced physics".

Got it now. Reviewers are definitely being sissies. It's not great by any stretch, but it's not nearly as bad as the pretentious faction makes it out to be.
There are so many stupid criticisms in the reviews, just out of desperation to express unreasonable disappointment. So the shotgun does less damage from far away? Yeah, when did that ever make sense in an FPS? Oh, only ever since Doom, I guess. Someone complained about the aiming being impossible. Then why do I keep doing headshots left and right (not that it would matter that much with the damage engine)? Guess my copy must be bugged or what. Oh, and it has stupid things like 2-weapon limit and autoregen health, which is a great opportunity to point out its inferiority to any other FPS out there.
The game is "just alright," and reviewers can't deal with it. They either wanted it to be awesome or horribly bad, and they desperately adjust their reviews to what they feel is closer.
I resent the joyride mentality with such heavy scripting and vehicle after vehicle after turret, but I'm having more fun than I ever had with, say, Halo.
Also, are the unloaded textures on the 360 fixed? There was a patch installed when I first started, and I didn't encounter any so far.
