[/li][li] Linear level designs [/quote] This is a problem? I'm not eager to go back to the days of Turok: Dinosaur Hunter.

It would be nice to have a less linear FPS now and then. Turok was an extreme example of nonlinearity with giant levels shrouded in fog. The original Duke 3d was good- open levels you had to explore, but small/memorable enough to not get lost in.

My, Destructoid is even harsher, expected from Jim Sterling but the complaints about the gameplay are about the same I'm hearing everywhere. He also points out a certain scene of a certain level, searched it on Youtube and... ugh. Disgusting. Not on a visual level but because of how Duke acts and says there. Sincerely, I don't remember Duke Nukem 3D ever falling so low.

Would it have hurt them to have done another third-person Duke game like Time to Kill? In fact, weren't three handheld games meant to come out over three years ago? Is Duke Nukem really much of a videogame series? My, Destructoid is even harsher, expected from Jim Sterling but the complaints about the gameplay are about the same I'm hearing everywhere. He also points out a certain scene of a certain level, searched it on Youtube and... ugh. Disgusting. Not on a visual level but because of how Duke acts and says there. Eurogamer has a platform comparison piece hereThe PC version is best, as expected, but as far as consoles go the PS3 version is apparently much better than the 360 version. It runs at a steady 30 FPS with almost no screentearing, whereas the 360 version has a very shaky framerate and lots of screentearing. Kind of sucks since I would have preferred to play it on 360, but I guess I'll pick up the PS3 version instead... when I get around to it.

Ars Technica isn't generous either: it opens with a little shot at some fans and goes on with all the unfavourable comparisons with the 15-years-old Duke Nukem 3D. Maybe the reviewer would have forgiven the humour at least partially if he found the game better. After watching more footage of that contested Alien Hive level I must say it's a strange departure from the game's usual atmosphere - which makes *that* scene stand out even more badly.

Actually, that's a factor that isn't actually that much of a departure from its predecessor. Just taken to a slightly more uncomfortable extreme.

Aside from Duke's off colour remark it doesn't seem to be particularly bad given the source. And that bad joke is just evidence that the script writing on this thing blows.
I wonder whether people will lament not being back in the world of Bullet"Dick"Storm - at least that game had good shooting.

As a big fan of the Saturn Duke Nukem 3D all this negative opinion is disheartening. I don't put a lot of stock in many of the places doing the reviewing and I frequently like under-appreciated games, but this just seems too clear that the game is not so great. I'm looking forward to players on here that bought it, playing through it... hurry up KittenCC... and giving honest comments.
That's too bad because I'm not drawn to FPS games all that frequently and I could've used another. Not to say I'll never buy it but I'm put off plunking down first week money on it. That's okay. It ain't like there's a lack of other games to buy.

The only thing that's different about it is that Duke makes an awful pun joke about it. I'm starting to wonder how many people remember DN3D as well as they think they do.

I'm starting to wonder how many people remember DN3D as well as they think they do. I think that people have become too focused on Duke's "personality" (for lack of a better term) over time. Duke 3D wasn't a good game because it had pixelated strippers and cheesy one-liners. That got it attention and made it a bit infamous, sure, but it didn't make it a good game. It was a good game because it had really great level design in a more contemporary setting, a huge variety of crazy weapons and items nobody had ever seen before in an FPS, and fun shooting mechanics. Far too much effort on Duke Nukem Forever was spent on Duke as a character and on half-assed parody, and not nearly enough was spent on making sure the game was any fun to play.
